What causes my Dell laptop to freeze and make a loud noise?

Lately, my computer freezes up a lot. The cursor stops moving and the screen becomes covered in vertical lines or little white blocks. When this happens, it makes a loud, repetitive ticking sound.

It just happens at random: sometimes during startup, sometimes right after I log on and sometimes while I'm using the internet or watching a video or something.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 and my OS is Windows Vista if that helps.|||possible harddrive failure or fan or cna be even other device/s can cause it.

but first, try unplugging any external preipherals connected to your computer and see what happens.

also try working on your system with the battery alone if it happens. then check if it happens with the ac adapter connected.

you might wanna check also the pc cards if there are and also your optical drive if any of them is causing the noise.

since it's intermittent then you can update ALL necessarry drivers of thaht computer and don't forget to flash the BIOS. it would help really.

access this site and get the downloads: http://support.dell.com/support/download鈥?/a>

note: download and install the following in order: notebook system software(under system utilities), ricoh(under chipset), you can also update the video driver(depends on what video card is in there check msinfo32 using run then go to the display to check the driver needed) and also you can install the audio if you want just to update all drivers. then lastly install the BIOS.

if everything fails, you might wanna contact dell regarding the issue.

best of luck!|||just goto www.support.dell.com and enter your service tag here and then check for updates and install them and then run the diag there and check to see if have any bad hardware if that don't do it then reinstall windows vista but make sure you have all the updates and windows vista sp1.

good luck.
